The 2025 Ford Explorer vs. the 2024 Explorer

The Ford Explorer is a real automotive pioneer. Ford developed a successful SUV formula after the Explorer was first introduced in the early 1990s and helped shape the future of the SUV. It's a mid-size three-row crossover that has a spacious, comfortable interior and it's Ford's most popular SUV. Here's a look at the coming new 2025 Ford Explorer and how it compares with the 2024 model that's available at Thomason Ford in Aumsville, OR.

Here's what's new in the 2025 Ford Explorer

Ford has revised the front fascia giving it new headlamps, a new grille and lower air inlets while the back end now comes with new taillamps. Platinum, ST and ST-Line buyers can get an available new black painted roof option that will give the 2025 Ford Explorer a distinctive new appearance. The new Explorer comes with an updated interior that puts a high priority on comfort with higher-grade materials and new soft touch surfaces on the door panels and center console. The 2025 Explorer will be the first Ford model to offer the Ford Digital Experience, a new software system that can easily integrate your favorite apps and provide Internet browsing when you're parked.

Changes in trim levels for 2025

The 2024 Ford Explorer had a long list of eight trims but the 2025 lineup has been reduced to four models: The base Active trim, the ST-Line, the ST and Platinum. The ST-Line has the same sporty exterior features as the ST and runs with a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower along with standard 20-inch painted alloy wheels. The ST-Line can tow 5000 pounds with the V6 engine and it comes with a black painted roof.

Engines and performance in the 2025 Explorer vs. the 2024 model

The Active, ST-Line and Platinum models all operate with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 300 horsepower. That's the same as the base powertrain in the 2024 Explorer models. The ST trim is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that's good for 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque and it will reach 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

The 2025 Ford Explorer will have a little less towing capacity than the 5,600 pounds in the 2024 model but it still comes in at 5,000 pounds. All 2025 Explorer models will have a Class III Towing package that includes a trailer wiring harness, a hitch and a trailer sway control system.

A comparison of interiors

Both the 2024 and 2025 versions of the Ford Explorer offer three rows and plenty of comfort, especially in the first two rows. It's simple for passengers to reach the third row with a mechanism that moves the second-row seat out of the way with the touch of a button. For 2025, the Explorer provides new interior color schemes and more soft touch materials on door panels, the dashboard and the center console. The Explorer's dashboard has been redesigned for 2025 to give front passengers more room.

For 2025, the Ford Explorer gives you 18.2 cubic feet of cargo room with all seats up, 47.9 cubic feet with the third seat down and a maximum of 87.8 cubic feet with the two rear seats folded down. Every new 2025 Ford Explorer will come up with a 13.2-inch infotainment display that includes wireless smartphone connectivity and Amazon Alexa built-in. Explorer passengers will be able to play video games like Ford's special version of Asphalt Nitro 2 when the vehicle is parked. Other tech features include eight USB ports, 12-volt outlets and a power liftgate.

A comparison of fuel economy estimates

Both the 2024 and 2025 Ford Explorer SUVs with rear-wheel drive and the turbocharged four-cylinder engine will give you a 21 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway. With the twin-turbo V6, the 2025 Ford Explorer will continue to get the same 18 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway with rear-wheel drive as it did in 2024.
